The Home Based Life Saving Skills (HBLSS) training manual is a family focused, community-based program that aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality through supporting birth preparedness and encouraging community involvement.

The three-volume manual features a flexible, modular design of 12 preventive and life-saving skill topics. To maximize learning among people with limited reading skills, the content is reinforced through a fourth booklet of pictorial "Take Action" cards.

“Birth teams and birth attendants can help save the lives of women and babies by recognizing problems and taking action.”

Home Based Life Saving Skills represents a critical re-thinking of community-based approaches. It takes into account the social context of childbirth, focusing on the pregnant woman, her family caregivers and home birth attendant. The manuals enhance existing care practices by negotiating safe, feasible and acceptable actions that could be taken in the home setting if life-threatening complications occur.

Volume One: Basic Information provides clear information on maternal and child health issues, including how to prevent problems through community action and when to refer women to a clinic or hospital. Volume Two: Woman Information covers common health problems in pregnant women, including excessive bleeding, fever, headache, and delayed birth. Volume Three: Baby Information includes infant health issues such as trouble breathing at birth, low birth weight, and sickness. HIV awareness and prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission are fully integrated in all parts of the manual.

The American College of Nurse-Midwives field-tested the HBLSS materials, process, and activities in India, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Gaza Strip, and the West Bank, to ensure its usefulness in a variety of social and cultural situations.
